Shane G. Ferguson, MD Pediatric Cancer Research Fund : Kids Create Hope

Our Mission

To honor Shane's memory, his family established Kids Create Hope in association with the Roswell Park Alliance Foundation to accomplish two goals:
- Supporting pediatric cancer research
- Empowering children to be proactive, giving members of society

Supporting Research

Proceeds from the Shane G. Ferguson, M.D. Pediatric Cancer Research Fund benefit pediatric cancer research through Carly's Club at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
Cancer is the chief cause of death by disease in children under age 14. However, thanks to donations to pediatric cancer research, over the past 3 decades cancer survival rates have increased dramatically. 30 years ago:
- 5% of acute lymphoblastic leukemia patients survived; presently 94% survive.
- 7% of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma patients survived; presently 85% survive.
- 10% of medulloblastoma patients survived; presently 85% survive.
- 5% of Ewing's sarcoma patients survived; presently 65% survive.

Empowering Children

Shane and family Shane often quoted the proverb "It takes a village to raise a child," realizing also that the goal is to raise a child with a sense of duty to that village. Infants influence their families just by bringing smiles to their faces. Developing children are involved in household chores and family decisions, learning that their actions have a stake in how smoothly the family unit runs. As children participate in larger communities, they develop both a sense of belonging and purpose.

If our children see that we have a sense of responsibility to our communities, they will learn to share in this responsibility. Children see firsthand that adults, especially parents, make a difference through awareness of current events, involvement in community interest groups, and dedication to causes and charities. Truly, our actions speak louder than our words.

By encouraging participation in meaningful causes, like Kids Create Hope, parents offer children some of the building blocks necessary for development of a strong, socially conscious adult; one who is aware, involved and dedicated to others and the future.
